A total of 1,000 homes are in a mandatory evacuation zone in the county, Polk County Judge Sydney Murphy told CNN. “Due to continuous rainfall across East Texas and rising levels in creeks and rivers, flood levels may increase. Now, those arid ranch lands are offering a new moneymaking opportunity: data centers. Lancium, an energy and data center management firm setting up shop in Fort Stockton and Abilene, is one of many companies around the country betting that building data centers close to generating sites will allow them to tap into underused clean power. In the past, companies built data centers close to internet users, to better meet consumer requests, like streaming a show on Netflix or playing a video game hosted in the cloud. But the growth of artificial intelligence requires huge data centers to train the evolving large-language models, making proximity to users less necessary. But as more of these sites start to pop up across the United States, there are new questions on whether they can meet the demand while still operating sustainably.

CNN —The firing of Jimbo Fisher will reportedly cost Texas A&M University about $77 million to buy out his contract, according to multiple reports and the salary tracking website Spotrac, after the school relieved him of his duties as head football coach on Sunday. When Fisher was first named head football coach at Texas A&M in 2017, the university said he had agreed to a 10-year contract worth $75 million, adding no “state-appropriated funds” would be used toward his salary. The finances behind the decision to fire the coach are “monumental,” Ross Bjork, Texas A&M director of athletics, said during a Sunday evening news conference. “As the contract states, there is a buyout provision in coach Fisher’s contract and those details will be worked out,” Bjork said. He was hired in December 2017 after spending eight seasons as head coach at Florida State University, where he led the Seminoles to a national championship.

Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk is overseeing a lawsuit that challenges the FDA approval of mifepristone. A hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, but the judge hoped to delay publicizing the date, per WaPo. But the Texas judge overseeing the case — who is known for his conservative politics and anti-abortion stance — hoped to hide the date of the hearing until right before the scheduled date, The Washington Post reported. In addition, he told attorneys on the call that members of the courthouse have received threats due to the lawsuit, the Post reported. According to the report, the Post had attempted to seek information about the date of the hearing before the Friday call but received no response.
Matthew Kacsmaryk is a Texas federal judge who was nominated by Donald Trump in 2017. Kacsmaryk graduated from Abilene Christian University in 1999 and received his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 2003. The Post reported that it was during law school when Kacsmaryk focused on abortion rights. Kacsmaryk also served as the executive editor of the Texas Review of Law & Politics and received two Dean's Achievement Awards, according to the questionnaire. During his undergraduate years, studying political science, Kacsmaryk was outspoken about his conservative views and stances on abortion.
As a result, political observers say, public school funding is effectively on the ballot Tuesday. “These groups have been demonizing what is being taught in public schools, and that’s the fastest way to erode faith that public schools work,” Rottinghaus said. (Abbott publicly came out in support of private school vouchers two months after winning the primary with 66.5% of the vote.) Greg Abbott in the GOP primary, campaigned in support of private school vouchers. “I will never support vouchers.”Rep. John Bucy III said he will continue to oppose private school vouchers.
